Problem: When I start Netscape, it comes up to a Netscape home page (or AOL or other home page that is not desired). How can I get my KC Online / Hoosierlink page back?
Solution: Go up to your Options menu at the top of your screen and go down to General Preferences. At the very bottom of this page there is a section labeled "Browser Starts With". Make sure that the dot next to "Home Page Location" is filled in. Then in the text box to the right, you can enter the name of whatever page you want to come up first when you open up Netscape. You can use the KC Online homepage (www.kconline.com) or even Yahoo (www.yahoo.com) or other frequently visited pages.
Problem: I was using the Internet earlier, and now when I go to open up Netscape, nothing happens. Why won't it open?
Solution: Netscape, like many other Mac programs, does not exit the program when you close all the windows. This means that if you closed the Netscape window to exit the last time you used it, Netscape is still running in the background. You can get your Netscape window back by double-clicking the Netscape icon, and then going up to the File menu at the top of the screen. From here select New Web Browser and your old Netscape window should reappear. Keep in mind that if you are not online when you do this, you won't be able to load any more web pages. The next time you want to exit Netscape, go up to the File menu and select Quit.
Problem: Okay, now that I know I have to select Quit to get out of my programs.. is there any possible way that I can quit them by closing the window like I tried to do before?
Solution: You're in luck! There is a program called "Quit It" that does just that. Whenever the last window in a program is closed, it exits the program for you. Now where can you get this program? From the Software Download page you saw on the Mac Tech Support main page. If you have any problems on how to use this program, email the address in the Read Me attatched to the program.
Problem: I just finished connecting to the Internet, but when I open Netscape it says it can't find the page. I know I'm connected because my modem lights are still on, and I know the page should be up because it's the KC Online Home Page. So why can't I connect to it?
Solution: To take care of this problem, go up to the Options menu and select Network Preferences. Then click the very last tab labeled "Proxies". Right here you most likely have one of the bottom two circles filled in, choose the top one to take care of your problem. If you turn off the proxies and you still can't load web pages, see the Getting Connected section.
Problem: My friend just told me not to accept any cookies from the Internet because they are bad for my computer. What exactly is a cookie and how do I know when I get one?
Solution: Cookies are just small packets of information sent to your computer from a web site. The site uses this information to conduct surveys (to see what sites are visited a lot), to remember who you are (when you order things online), or just to store certain site preferences on your computer. So cookies are not exactly bad for your computer, but you don't have to accept them either. If a site requires you to accept cookies, they will post it somewhere on their site so that you know that ahead of time. Now if you still don't like the sound of cookies, here's how you can tell when one is sent to your computer. Go up to your Options menu and select Network Preferences. From here select the "Protocols" tab. Check the box labeled "Accepting a Cookie". This will make a warning box appear each time a cookie is sent to the computer. In that screen you can either accept or cancel the cookie.
Problem: I am trying to access a java web page and it says I don't have java plug-ins. Why doesn't your service support java?
Solution: The service does support java (and I'm pretty sure all services do), the only thing that might not support java is your web browser. To get java, just put the CD you recieved from our main office back in your CD drive and install Netscape 3.0 again. This time, select custom installation and make sure that the Java boxes are checked. Another place you might want to check is in the Options menu, under Network Preferences. On this page you can click on the "Languages" tab and make sure both of the boxes are checked.
Problem: For some reason every time I open Netscape it gives me a Type 1 error. How do I fix it?
Solution: A Type 1 error is a memory error. It means that the program doesn't have enough RAM to start. You can highlight the Netscape icon and go up to the File menu and select Get Info. On this screen you can changed the memory requirements at the bottom. Try moving them up a little bit and see if it helps. If you still get the error, try restarting the computer. If the problem still persists, you might need to upgrade your RAM. Don't worry though, RAM has been fairly inexpensive lately, so it shouldn't be too costly.
Problem: There are more versions of Netscape on the CD, how do I know which one to choose?
Solution: If your MacOS is version 7.5.3 or below, use the upgrades on the CD to upgrade your system to 7.5.5. If you have 7.5.5, then install Netscape 3.0. If you have system 7.6 or 7.6.1, install Netscape 4.0. If you have MacOS 8.0, 8.1, 8.5, 8.5.1, or 8.6, install Netscape Communicator 4.5, and if you have the time, download 4.61 from Netscape's web page. You can find out your system version by going up to the Apple Menu and selecting About this Computer.
