Netscape 4.5 Mail Troubleshooting

Please follow these steps before going on. These first few steps must be followed to solve any of the problems related to Netscape Mail.

Click on your Edit menu and go down to Preferences. Then in the Category section, click the arrow next to Mail and Newsgroups so that it drops down a long list of topics. You can now continue to search the page for your problem.

Problem: When I go to check my mail, it says that the username and password is invalid, but I'm pretty sure it's in there right. What should I do?

Solution: First, if you are using Netscape 3.0, see the note at the top.

Click on Mail Servers in the Category list, and select the Incoming Mail Server that is listed (there should only be one). Then click the Edit button. On this screen, make sure that the User Name blank is filled in with your KC Online / Hoosierlink username in all lowercase. Then press the OK button. On the screen it returned to, make sure that the Outgoing Mail Server User Name is also filled out with your KC Online / Hoosierlink username in all lowercase. The next time you check your mail, make sure that you are entering the password correctly and in lowercase letters. If it still says the username or password is invalid, call Tech Support so they can check the account to see if the username/password you are using is the same one that we have listed for you.

Problem: It says that it can't find the server when I try to check or send mail. Are you guys having a problem down there?

Solution: The mail server is rarely down, so that is usually not the case for this error. Now don't take that the wrong way, just because it is rarely down, doesn't mean it never goes down. If you follow the steps here and it does not clear up the problem, call Tech Support and make sure that the server is still running properly. On your Category list select Mail Server. Then on the right, make sure the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server says mail.kconline.com. If it says smtp.kconline.com, switch it over. Then select the Incoming Mail Server (there should only be one) and press the Edit button. On this screen, make sure the Server Name says mail.kconline.com. Also, make sure the Server Type is POP. Then press OK. If it still says it can't find the server, give Tech Support a call to make sure the mail server is running properly.

Problem: Whenever I try to send a message, I get an error that says "451 <email address> Domain must resolve.Check your e-mail client setup." What on earth does that mean?

Solution: To get rid of this error, select Identity in the Category list. Then make sure that both the Email Address and Reply-To Address blanks have the same email address in them and that they are both typed correctly. This error comes back if the Reply-To Address is different from your email address, or if it is mistyped or does not exist.

Problem: Someone sent me a file attachment, but everytime I open it, it doesn't do anything. What is wrong?

Solution: Most likely this attachment was sent from a PC user (it might have .exe on the end). If the file is a PC file, you won't be able to open it on your Macintosh. Now while this seems to be the bad side of owning a Macintosh right now, there is also a good way to look at it. File attachments are how email viruses are spread throughout the PC community. Many of the email viruses that are spread around, do not have cures yet. Since you are the lucky owner of a Macintosh, a PC virus will do nothing to you. Currently there are thousands of viruses for PC's and only around 100 for Mac (most of which are harmless). So next time one of your friends are trying as hard as they can to find a fix for the virus they downloaded, you can sit back and relax without worrying about things like that.

Problem: I constantly hear about new viruses that destroy computers and ruin everything on your computer. How do I know if I get one of these and how can I prevent it?

Solution: All of the 'computer destroying viruses' that you hear about, won't affect you at all. Why? Because you own a Macintosh. Any virus that a PC user can get, you are immune to. Now granted, there are a few viruses for the Macintosh, but only a couple are harmful, and all of the viruses have fixes available for them. So you won't have to worry about any of the thousands of dangerous PC viruses spreading around.
